„On Classical Musicians and Micro-Trauma.“
Markus Kislich is a Professional Athletic Strength Coach.
He makes athletes stronger, faster, more explosive.
He also prehabs them(read: injury-proving) and rehabilitates them where necessary.
But why would He write on Classical Musicians?
„They are a lot like athletes , in many ways.“, says Markus. „Some Violinists practise around 8 h. a day!
They develop similar problems as athletes for similar reasons.
We deal with that a lot here at the VVV Rehab-Clinic.
Our main-clientele come out of sports, naturally, but we get to see more and more musicians.“
So what type of injuries are they and what makes them similar to for example a soccer players‘ problems?
„Take a violinist. The symptoms range from the hand all the way up to the shoulder, neck and upper back.
Whereas the soccer player might have an issue in say the groin or the calf.
It becomes interesting when you look at the reason, or the primary cause for these troubles.
Because the underlying factors, and the results, are the same:
Micro-Trauma, caused by overuse.
What happens when you run around kicking a ball all day, or play an instrument for hours on end, or operate a keyboard all day long by the way, is exactly the same thing: You build up scar-tissue.
This comes from miniature injuries -micro trauma- induced by the high-frequency repetitions. The damage accumulates over time until the muscle is one hard, tight knot of basically all fibrotic tissue.
The structure looses its‘ elasticity, flexibility, strength and endurance. Circulation is drastically reduced, so is oxygen-supply(Hypoxia), nutrients don‘t get to the tissue and waste-substrates cannot be cleared sufficiently.
That in turn creates even more scar-tissue, it‘s a cycle.
Then you get Adhesions: Muscles get stuck, glued to each other and don‘t glide freely any longer, all the Bio-mechanics are messed up.
You end up with a structure that‘s tight and weak and does not perform optimally and is very susceptible to acute injury, like pulls… Not a good situation.“
But what can be done?
„Well, a lot.
We manually find the fibrotic areas and adhesions and basically release them. We usually restore the structure fully, to as good as new and better. Strength and endurance returns, flexibility levels are better than before and everything performs nice and smooth, ‘In the Groove‘ as it should.
Our Soft-Tissue Manipulation(http://www.activerelease.com) does not only rehab injuries, it can actually improve performance to better than ever levels:
What all this translates to is a soccer player that runs faster, kicks harder, jumps higher etc., and for example a Violinist that actually plays better!
The fingers work more quickly, smoothly and easily, also they‘re stronger and with better endurance.
Pros call it:“ Being right in the groove“, ie.: Everything works just right, just perfectly.“
